Sermon - 2020-03-22

We are in the midst of Lent. A time of reflection, a time of greater understanding about our faith and life, and a time for us to really understand God. I know many people are struggling with these obstacles and challenges that we are facing now. People have a desire to be with one another but also a fear if a person were to infect me with this virus. We are told to isolate, quarantine and prepare, words that spark within us more anxiety and fear. I have heard many people on social media, news, and other sources that echo the beginning of our gospel. “Who is to blame?” We want an answer and yet in the midst of the crisis that is not always where we find the solution.

So it is this gospel today that we share that can help us to better understand what it is Christ is calling us to do. Jesus stands in the midst of the crowds of people and the people know a truth, that this man has been blind from the very beginning, he was born this way. For the whole of his life, this man was treated as a lesser person and someone who experienced rejection by the people around him. However it is this very man whom Jesus goes up to and declares that “he is human”. He is not defined by his shortcomings or differences but rather is still able to love, care, and be a child of God. The man then is taken into question to determine what it is that is going on in the community. To know if what is happening is a good thing or not.

Many of us know that this virus is not a good thing within our own community. However, how it impacts our lives and our faith is up to us. We can be fearful and isolate ourselves within our own homes, to wait for this to pass. Or we can realize the ways that Christ is calling us to still be the church in the world. To find the people who are in need and let them know that “they are human. God loves them, we love them, and they matter to us.” This can be done through phone calls, many ways of using cameras for photos or videos, and even in handwritten letters.

We are in the midst of Lent, a season of change and reflection. We are also in the midst of this virus, giving us time to pause and reflect on how we are changing our lives to be focused on faith, focused on God, and sharing God’s Love as disciples of the Son of Man. Today may you be reminded of your calling to Discipleship. May you dwell in God’s Word and find ways to share God’s Love in the world around you. Amen.
