What is the purpose of a sermon?

Image
Have you ever wondered what the purpose a sermon is suppose to be? I mean this man or woman is standing up there, talking to a crowd of people.  What gives them the authority?  Why do they talk and talk about things that don't necessarily make sense or interest me?  What's the point? I have a confession to make, when I was growing up, I was that kid who did not always pay attention during the sermon.  It would not hold my attention.  I would either look at the stained glass windows, draw on the bulletin or there were some Sundays that I would actually do the head bang. (You know that time when you are trying to stay awake but are fighting falling back to sleep and your head falls down and whips back up. If you don't know what I am talking about, go to your next service and sit in the back and look around more than likely there will be one.)  Sadly this is still the case, although not when I am preaching.  For even when I hear some preachers, I still begin to wander into my

Third Chapter - Joseph

Within the life of Joseph, he enjoys many blessings from God and his Father, Abraham.  Yet his brothers did not enjoy Joseph's elevated status.  Joseph's brothers beat him and sold him into slavery.  Joseph was taken to Egypt.  Here Joseph suffered but still God was with him.  After many years, God raised Joseph to be the second in command in the land of Egypt. When have you felt blessed by God? Has there been a time that you have felt like a slave or in prison in your life?  God was still with you during that time.  Although we often need that reminder from others.

Sermon - October 21, 2012

Genesis 40:5-6; 9-22 NRSV 5 One night they both dreamed—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison—each his own dream, and each dream with its own meaning. 6 When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they were troubled. 9 So the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, “In my dream there was a vine before me, 10 and on the vine there were three branches. As soon as it budded, its blossoms came out and the clusters ripened into grapes. 11 Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.” 12 Then Joseph said to him, “This is its interpretation: the three branches are three days; 13 within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your office; and you shall place Pharaoh’s cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer. 14 But remember me when it is well with you; please do me the kindness to make mention

Tithe

Image
Is there really a loophole when it comes to tithing?  A person should really begin at the beginning of tithing.  "God created the heavens and the Earth and saw that they were good."Now if you are thinking, "Don't you think you went a little far?"  No because here we are reminded of who gave the gift in the first place.  Who gave you life and everything that is within the world around you.  The things that you enjoy, the food you eat, the clothes you wear, even the job you do, the health and the friends and family you enjoy.  All of these things were given to you from the one who created them. Truly all of these things are there for you to enjoy, cherish, and even love those who are within your life.  Yet one must also realize that these things are all a gift, even the life that you live.  The tithe is something that was put in place to remind people of that very thing.  The tithe was given to the church, the church would then use that money to help those who w

Genesis 37:1;3-8; 11; 13; 18-28 - NRSV 1 Jacob settled in the land where his father had lived as an alien, the land of Canaan. 3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his children, because he was the son of his old age; and he had made him a long robe with sleeves. 4 But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably to him.  5 Once Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him even more. 6 He said to them, “Listen to this dream that I dreamed. 7 There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright; then your sheaves gathered around it, and bowed down to my sheaf.” 8 His brothers said to him, “Are you indeed to reign over us? Are you indeed to have dominion over us?” So they hated him even more because of his dreams and his words. 11 So his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind. 13 And Israel said to Joseph, “Are

Second Chapter

Within the second chapter, we begin to see that though God had removed humankind from the Garden and from his presence.  God comes back to us.  God continues the relationship and forms a covenant with Abraham.  Abraham will have many descendants, those descendants will own land and also bless other nations through them. God calls Abraham when he is old, 75 to be exact, and has Abraham travel with his wife to a foreign land.  What is God calling you to do?  Where should you go to do God's work?  The chapter continues with Abraham and his son, Isaac, along with his son Jacob.  Within the story, we hear about how Isaac and Jacob are not perfect but God still uses them to do his work.  Have you ever felt that way?  Like you were not good enough, qualified or even able to do the work that God is calling you to do.  Remember, you are called and claimed by God.  You are not perfect but God will use you where you are to do great things.  Within this chapter, Abraham and his sons do a lot o

Genesis 25:19-28 - NRSV 19 These are the descendants of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham was the father of Isaac, 20 and Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, sister of Laban the Aramean. 21 Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, because she was barren; and the Lord granted his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived. 22 The children struggled together within her; and she said, ‘If it is to be this way, why do I live?’ So she went to inquire of the Lord. 23 And the Lord said to her, ‘Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples born of you shall be divided; one shall be stronger than the other, the elder shall serve the younger.’ 24 When her time to give birth was at hand, there were twins in her womb. 25 The first came out red, all his body like a hairy mantle; so they named him Esau. 26 Afterwards his brother came out, with his hand gripping Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bor
