Sermon - 2019-06-02

You have probably heard that the gospel is all around you. When people are outdoors, they are surrounded by God’s creations. Standing on mountain and seeing for miles, you can see the effects of God’s work in the world. Sitting on the beach, you can experience the effects of God’s work in the world. However here, we see the effects. We do not understand the purpose, the reason for the creation. We do not understand the love and care that is poured out through this creation until we understand the purpose of the message from God. So how do we do that? We spend time with God in His Word and in the world.

So stop and think about this for a moment: who was it that shared the love of God with you? Was it a family member? A mother or father that would drag you to church even though you would rather sleep. A grandmother who reminded you of the words of Jesus that are part of your life and that you should be thinking of to form your actions. Perhaps you had a friend? Someone who would invite you to church or to Bible study. Someone who would share with you the love that God talks about in the gospel but they would bring it life for you. I wonder, many of us can think of the person that brought us here and helped us along the journey of faith and life but how are you doing that for others. What are you planning or praying about to help others in their faith.

Now this sounds simple but for many of us, it is the struggle that we have because it is so simple that we do not do it. We will run from it, saying that it is not for us or that we do not have the time. We delay it declaring that we will get to it when we are older. When I retire, then i will learn more about this faith and read the bible. However, today, I am reminded that we do not know what tomorrow will be and that it is truly the message that we live over and over again is the one that truly resonates in our lives and in the lives others around us.

The gospel of Jesus Christ is so simple and yet we make it so complex. For good order and understanding, we strive to put the gospel into a box or into a story for understanding. However, the gospel is not simply head knowledge to understand, it is a message of work being done for you, for you to receive, and to share with others around. For there are times that we will say that we must do things this way, however it is not the action that is important but the meaning behind the action.

As I was talking with someone about the church, they commented to me that the operations of the church seem so different from the business world that they are used to. I reminded them that the church is not a business to be run but a mission to be shared. As we continued to talk, they repeated to me that the church does things that are different from the way that the world does them. I reminded them, that they are correct that when we are together we need to be a community: listen, caring and lifting each other up but through it all we are here living out the mission that God is has given to us and we are sharing together.

This week, I want you to consider what is your personal impact in your own life to help you in this journey of faith and understanding but also consider how it is you are helping impact others in your life as you are growing in your own journey.
