Sermon - 2018-08-19 - Rally Sunday

Today is Rally Sunday, the start of the school year and the reminder for all of us, why is it we study our faith.  Faith is something that is very unique because there is so much history, so much to understand who God is and the ways in which God has been a part of our lives for so long. However, the main purpose of all this is to get you to understand who God is and how is God calling you on a daily basis to live your life.

This history is something that some people love.  It is great to dive in and learn about people and how they lived their lives.  We can learn from their mistakes so that we do not repeat them. We can learn what has worked and what has not worked.  By studying history, we are able to see some of the big events and aspects that may repeat time and time again. For some things do change in life, the technology of electricity, phones, cell phones, and so much more. However, some things never change.  While aspects of life change, our human tendencies do not change. Yes, studying history we are able to bear witness to the ways in which we are repeating some of the same mistakes, our parents, great, great grandparents or so many others have made before.

Still others of us get bored in these pages of history, wondering when are we going to get to talk about things that are happening here and now.  When are there going to be conversations of what this faith looks like in our own modern world, with issues that do not have to deal with sheep and goats because I don’t deal with those on a daily basis and so it does not mean anything when Jesus is speaking about that.  And since some of you have cut carbs out of your diet, when Jesus says he is Bread of Life, you may wonder how does that work and is it healthy for you.

Now all of this faith has many aspects.  It does have a historical piece. It does have a current and very much alive aspect in your own life.  It has parts that relate to this world and there are parts that do not make sense in this world. Regardless it comes down to two complex and very simple words.  Faith and belief. Faith in what God is doing for you and for me. Believing in the words and promises that come to us in Jesus Christ.

Now talking to historians, scientists, engineers, mathematicians and statistician, even their own practices and aspects of their regarded disciplines, comes back to these two words as well.  For they have faith in the work that others before them have done and they believe in the findings. Yes, it is often our own experiences and how we understand concepts, ideas, and even people, that truly shape and form us to viewing the world and how we shall live our lives.

This Rally Sunday, I want you to be reminded of why it is you are here in church.  Not just one time but why you come back here every single time. For this is a place of discovery.  A place to discover who God is, what God is calling you to do and be in this world but also a place to discover with people who do not have it all figured out but are striving to understand a complex God who simply loves you.

So if you need to recommit yourself to being here, showing up and exploring with others and supporting one another in this journey of life and faith.  Amen.
