Church is like.... Football Edition

This is a great activity for confirmation and others to think of what church is like and how it relates to so many other things within a person's life. It helps you understand some of the traditions that have taken place within the church, and then becomes part of other aspects in your life.

Church is like Football.

Football has a variety of positions within the team. When each of the players is playing their best to work as a team with their duties being fulfilled, the team can succeed and play a good game. Whether each person is on the defensive line or offensive line, all must work together. It is the same within the church, when all the members, committees and leaders are working together as a team; then they can care for the community and work towards helping God's people learn, grow and work together even better.

Just as there are different teams within the team; offense, defense, and special teams, there are also different teams or committees within the church. Each using the talents, strengths, and gifts to best share with the whole team or church. Each of these teams or committees have a special focus to ensure that the whole team is able to move forward and be successful.

In football, the crowd that gathers influences the players in many ways. When there are more people supporting and gathering to cheer on the players, the players seem to do better. The people have a common reason, shared experience, and even know the chants or cheers. This is very similar to church service in which there are response to the prayers and parts of the worship service in which the crowd or congregation contributes greatly to the shared worship experience.

Football teams and churches can learn from one another in understanding identity, shared experience, and even involving more people into the experience that is the game or worship.
