Ten Commandments (in a modern age)

The Hebrew people were living in a life in which things were decided for them, their work, home, food and much was all dictated to them. The Ten Commandments were given to the people to help them with order within their life, how they should be an individual within a community and understand good and healthy relationships. Good relationships between God and you along with you and those around you. The people would need these in order to function and operate, make good decisions and ensure that God was important within their life.

These Ten Commandments are something that can with stand the test of time. They are lessons can impact our daily life. Here is my attempt:

First Commandment

Honor God and what God has done for you

Why is this important? God is the one who created you and sustains you. God has helped you become the person that you are today, getting through the struggles, giving you the good things, and reminding you that tomorrow is secure and taken care of. We fear God because these things can go away. We love God because of all the ways, people and things that God has cared for and loved us. We trust God because God gave us life to live and be within this world. it is gift of life that we are able to give thanks to God.

Second Commandment

A name is important and has value, Honor God by using God's name in a good way

Why is this important? There are some things that are so very important within the world that should always be cherished and regarded in such a way that when we use them, we are reminded of their importance within our lives, interacting with others, and every other aspect within creation.

Third Commandment

Worship God, to remind yourself of your place and your relationship with everything.

Why is this important? Setting a time and place in order to regard something as important within your life, reminds yourself and those who you gather with that this is important. Taking time out of your schedule and routine for rest, refocusing your work and your understanding on God's Will and the life you are living, allows you to reengage the world around you with a new spirit, new purpose and helping you remember why this life is so important as a gift.

Fourth Commandment

Honor your parents

Why is this important? The importance of parents is great within your life. As you are born, your parents are there to care for you and teach you. For they are the authority figures that God gives to you to help you as you grow. Then as you get older, it is important respect others who are in authority. Along with that, when they are done and you are grown on your own, you are to care for them and ensure that you care for them as well.

Fifth Commandment

Do no harm to yourself or others

Why is this important? Most people understand, killing is bad, it ends someone's life, yet this commandment talks more about not only ending someone's life but ensuring that you actually care for others. It is helping you to live out, "love your neighbor as yourself" and "love your enemy".

Sixth Commandment

Cherish the gift of sex

Why is this important? The importance of keeping our words and conduct pure and honorable are imperative. Your physical actions and your words influence greatly the emotional and associated thoughts that are in your mind and form you as a person that impact your future. By maintaining this important commandment, a person is able to care for others so much more deeply by honoring them and looking upon them as God looks upon them.

Seventh Commandment

Cherish what you have, help others keep what they have.

Why is this important? Truly this commandment helps people TRUST one another. If you had to worry about someone else stealing or harming your property then you would be driven to not care for their needs but solely worry about our own. By honoring this commandment, we are able to work together to care for one another but also share freely and thus create a strong bond among us both.

Eighth Commandment

Honor the word you speak and the words others speak

Why is this important? This commandment works with the previous. We care for the reputation of others and even support them in the best way that we can understand their point of view. By doing this, we support and uplift the person along with strength the relationship that we hold with one another.

Ninth Commandment

Honor the gifts that God has given to others

Why is this important? When we long for our neighbor's house, we then place them as separate from us. By seperating them, we do not love or care for them, but then also do not care for what has been entrusted to us to care for or share.

Tenth Commandment

Honor the people that God has placed within a person's life. Supporting them all.

Why is this important? This commandment is to help us support those around your neighbor. Supporting and encouraging them again builds trust among you and your neighbor along with those who surround your neighbor.

These commandments are still so important to us even today because these relationships among one another and God are still at our core of who we are and what we long for within our society. These commandments provide structure and understanding for our daily lives but also help us to maintain those good relationships that we desire as well. Thanks be to God that we were given them and are able to strive for them. Yet we also know that we can not fully fulfilll these commandments in their entirety. There shall always be something that we fail to do or struggle with. It is for this reason that we need Jesus Christ and him crucified upon a cross, the love, grace and mercy that is given to us, enables us to continually receive and give forgiveness from these and many other things we do that are harmful. Thanks be to God for all of this. Amen.
